At KIREI, we use red LED light therapy (light-emitting diodes) with a wavelength of 630 nm. This specific red light wavelength penetrates approximately 2 mm deep into the skin, reaching the deeper layers where collagen and elastin are found. It does not penetrate deeply enough to reach or damage delicate eye structures such as the retina.
It’s important to understand that different red light therapy (RLT) devices operate at different energy levels. High-energy RLT, such as those used in medical settings, may pose risks to the eyes and often require protective eyewear. However, we use low-energy red LED light, similar to the type researchers have recently found beneficial in studies exploring RLT for dry eye and macular degeneration. That said, we do NOT recommend looking directly into the light, regardless of these findings.
Lastly, our product is specifically designed so the light targets the under-eye area and does not shine directly into the eyes when used correctly. You may also keep your eyes closed while positioning the device for added peace of mind and reopen them once it’s in place.
